Leyden, below serves as a public relations / public affairs / crisis communications
consultant to the Israel Defense Forces.
Jerusalem----April 2002....Below, Leyden was responsible for handling over 1,500
journalists in Jerusalem and Bethlehem during Operation Defensive Shield. In addition
to providing strategy, soundbytes and media coaching - here Captain Leyden (res.)
is coordinating a very special event - the release of hostages from Bethlehem's
Church of Nativity.
20,000
Palestinians pass through the Kalandia IDF security checkpoint daily. This
Palestinian women who had problems with her ID papers speaks with Leyden who was
serving as an IDF Humanitarian Officer. This was not a public relations exercise.
This checkpoint, outside of Rahmallah, is one of the very few real points of human
contact between the Israeli and Palestinian populations. The Israeli officers
who serve in this difficult, dangerous but rewarding assignment do so voluntarily
as good will ambassadors. Minutes after this photograph was taken the woman above
passed through Kalandia to visit her family. Photo:
